A Brooklyn man died last night after a small fire broke out in the basement of a three-story apartment building, officials said. The unidentified victim, who lived in the basement apartment at 186 Madison St. in Bedford-Stuyvesant, died shortly after 11 p.m. when the fire erupted. No other injuries were reported in the blaze.

Grace Kimbrough, 56, who lives on the third floor of the apartment building, said that she didn't realize there was a fire until firefighters knocked on her door.

Kimbrough said it wasn't until she got down to the first floor that she saw all the smoke coming from the basement.

She and the victim were the only occupants of the building.
