James Curran, a retired FDNY lieutenant and the president of the New York Firefighters Burn Center Foundation, died yesterday after a yearlong battle with cancer. He was 65.
For 25 years, Curran aided firefighter and civilian burn victims by raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for the foundation, which supports the Weill Cornell Medical Center burn unit. Curran was a member of the Fire Department for 33 years, retiring in 1995 as a lieutenant in Rescue 1. In 1982, he was involved in a dramatic rescue of a workman trapped in a crane 300 feet above Fifth Ave. during a four-alarm fire that roared atop the unfinished Trump Tower.
Curran is survived by his daughters, Gwen Curran, Pam Henry, and Merry Filasky, and five grandchildren. His wife, Marylyn, a former burn unit nurse, died suddenly on Sept. 20.
Visiting hours are Sunday, 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., and Monday, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., at Dodge Thomas Funeral Home, 26 Franklin Ave., Glen Cove, L.I. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Gertrude's Church, 28 School St., Bayville, L.I.
