A 44-year-old man died after he was hit by a No.6 train in lower Manhattan last night, police said.

The victim, whose name wasn't immediately available, either fell or jumped onto the tracks at the Canal St. station on the Lexington Ave. line about 6:45 p.m.

An MTA spokeswoman said the train conductor saw the man on the northbound tracks and activated the emergency brakes. Still, two cars rolled into the station and struck the man, pinning him between the train and the base of the platform, she said. Firefighters from Ladder 20 and Rescue 6 freed the victim by using high-pressure air bags to create space between him and the train. He was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival, cops said.
