A team of hazardous materials firefighters and a Midtown Tunnel officer helped deliver a baby at the crossing's toll plaza early yesterday, officials said. The special delivery came about 4:30 a.m. when a woman went into labor after her Manhattan-bound livery cab went through the toll, officials said. Firefighters from Hazmat Company No.1 were on their way back to their Queens headquarters when Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority officers flagged the two trucks down and asked for help. The young mom was in pain, lying in the back of the parked cab, next to the worried father. Firefighters pulled out a birth kit - filled with scissors, blankets and other necessities for a newborn - just in time as TBTA Lt. Barbara Hogan helped the mom deliver the baby girl. Veteran firefighters Tim Regan and Lt. John Berna checked the infant's breathing and wrapped the girl in warm blankets before setting clamps down on the umbilical cord and handing the scissors to Hogan. The baby was taken to a hospital in stable condition. For Berna, who has three children of his own, the call was a nice change of pace for the unit, which covers the entire city. "It's the first time I delivered a baby on duty," he said. "Instead of losing people, we're bringing somebody into the world."
