Beaten Bravest buoyed by comrades

NY Daily News

The Queens firefighter savagely beaten on the five-year anniversary of Sept.11 is slowly recovering as he draws strength from a nearly round-the-clock vigil kept by his fellow firefighters.

Richard Berkhout, 46, suffered a fractured skull and partial paralysis from the Mastic Beach, L.I., incident, but the 13-year FDNY veteran has started talking to his colleagues from his Brookhaven Memorial Hospital bed.

"If it was up to him, he'd be released this afternoon and get back to the firehouse," said Hugh Diamond, 39, who also works at Engine 298 in Jamaica.
