The city firefighters union dropped its support of the World Trade Center Memorial Foundation yesterday over a controversial museum slated for the site. The Uniformed Firefighters Association objects to the placement of the International Freedom Center so close to where 343 FDNY members perished on Sept. 11. "Our membership and our 9/11 families believe that the memorial design will take away from the memory and sacrifice of the firefighters who bravely gave their lives," UFA President Steve Cassidy said in a statement. The firefighters union expressed concern that an "insufficient and inadequate" 9/11 memorial would be overshadowed by the "prominent role" of the Freedom Center, a fear echoed by many victims' survivors. Last week, the chairman of the Lower Manhattan Development Corp. ordered the Freedom Center to communicate with the dissatisfied families and present more specific ideas by Sept. 23. The Drawing Center, a SoHo gallery that has exhibited pieces critical of the U.S., pulled out of the memorial last week.
