Mike praises fireman hurt in accident

NY Daily News

Mayor Bloomberg lauded a city firefighter who lost his leg in a horrific crash after meeting with the injured Bravest yesterday.

Firefighter John Walters, 37, told Bloomberg that he is "looking forward to the future" during their chat in Bellevue Hospital.

"I'm thinking about this guy upstairs and his view of how the best days of his life are still to come even after he lost a leg trying to protect the public in this city," Bloomberg said.

The Rescue 1 firefighter's right leg was amputated after a taxi slammed into the back of his truck on the upper West Side last month. His colleague, Michael Schunk, also was seriously injured during the accident.

Walters - who also was visited by his mother, sister and two brothers - told Bloomberg that fellow firefighters were fitting his Port Washington, L.I., home with a new bathroom to make his life easier.

"He has, as many of you know, lost a leg. But I will say, his spirits were just as up as you could possibly be. He's looking forward to the future," Bloomberg said.
