PRACTICE MAKES HEROES PERFECT

A practice drill at a Queens firehouse turned into the real thing yesterday when firefighters smelled smoke from a burning house two blocks away.

They immediately raced to the home at 88th Avenue and 153rd Street in Jamaica.

"When we pulled up, someone had jumped out the window, someone else was about to do the same thing [from the roof]," said probationary firefighter John German. The man was carried down on a ladder.

Other firefighters fought their way through heavy smoke to save two unconscious men inside.
