Firefighters and an off-duty lifeguard saved two men caught in rough waters while swimming off Rockaway Beach yesterday, authorities said.

The victims, ages 24 and 17, whose names were not disclosed, were swimming at 4 p.m. when they became trapped in the currents off Rockaway Beach Boulevard, fire officials said.

The 24-year-old lost consciousness as the teenager struggled to keep his head above water.

Kristin Bledsoe, 23, the lifeguard, and an off-duty firefighter went into the water with Boogie Boards, and Bledsoe found one of the victims beneath the surf.

"I felt him under my feet and pulled him up and got his head out of the water," she said.

"Thank God I felt him or I would have never found him."

The victims were taken to Peninsula General Hospital, where the 24-year-old victim was in serious condition and the 17-year-old victim was stable.
