DRAMATIC RESCUE OFF CONEY ISLAND

NY Post

by Philip Messing

The crew of a Fire Department rescue boat plucked a helpless man from the water off Coney Island last night — only minutes before their patrol was due to end.

Mareusz Zol-tek, 26, a Polish immigrant who moved to the city two months ago, was struggling 400 yards off shore after being pulled away from land by the current.

"I saw a head bobbing in heavy fog. He gave up swimming he was just treading water," said one rescuer, James Grillo.

Grillo and Michael Ryan, assigned to the FDNY's Marine 3, grabbed Zol-tek at 8:50 p.m., only 10 minutes before they were due to go off duty.
