FDNY ROOKIE RACKS UP 1ST RESCUE

NY Post

by PERRY CHIARAMONTE

A rookie firefighter reacted like a veteran yesterday when he helped an elderly woman from a blazing Inwood apartment building in his very first rescue.

Tom Zambrano, 25, and two other firefighters sprang from their Ladder 59 truck as it approached the burning apartment at 116 Seaman Ave. at 3:15 a.m. yesterday.

Zambrano, who has been on the job for under a year and a half, noticed Martha Gerngross, 98, struggling on the fire escape outside her sixth floor apartment.

The quick-thinking smoke-eater ran up and helped bring Gerngross down the fire escape to a second floor window, where she was placed on a gurney.

The woman was then brought to a hospital along with two others, and treated for smoke inhalation.
