Manhattan: Buildings Evacuated on East Side

NY Times

by COLIN MOYNIHAN

Several buildings were evacuated yesterday afternoon after firefighters found damaged beams at a construction site, the Fire Department said. John Sudnik, a deputy chief, said that firefighters arrived about 3 p.m. at a building under construction at 157 East 84th Street and found that a horizontal I-beam had twisted, throwing a vertical support column between the second and third floors out of alignment. Firefighters evacuated nine buildings, and residents at seven of the buildings were allowed back in within three hours. Officials said a residential and a commercial building on either side of the site would remain empty until repairs were made.
