MANHATTAN: THREE-ALARM FIRE ON UPPER EAST SIDE

Residents of an Upper East Side building had to flee their apartments last night when a stubborn three-alarm fire spread to at least three floors of the five-story building, the Fire Department said. The fire, at 513 E. 81st Street, near East End Avenue, started in a second-floor apartment and quickly spread through a shaft to other floors, Deputy Assistant Chief John Coloe said. He said the apartment where the fire started was like a Collyers' mansion, the term firefighters use for a residence piled with belongings. Once fire hoses sprayed water on the fire, Chief Coloe said, the piles of belongings collapsed into the narrow passageways throughout the apartment, making the firefighting effort a great deal more difficult. Three firefighters suffered minor injuries, Chief Coloe said.
