INACCURATE INFERENCE BY FDNY CONCERNING CORRECT
ACTIONS OF ENGINE 303
We still do not understand why the Department would take a common occurrence and blow it completely out of proportion. Here is a copy of the press release, which went to all the media editorial staff as a 'Letter to the Editor';
Dear Editor;
I am responding to the comments made by the New York City Fire Department to the media inferring that a Queens fire company was wrong by not responding to a fire emergency without a qualified motor pump operator.
The officer in charge of Engine Company 303 did the right thing by notifying the fire alarm dispatcher that this company was unable to respond due to an injury to the apparatus driver. This is what department regulations mandate. God forbid an unqualified driver was directed to drive the 20- Ton Apparatus to the scene and either had an accident causing injuries to a civilian of members of his company or if that same driver arrived on the scene and was unable to provide water for the fire due to his lack of training. The department brass would then be looking to bring the officer or the firefighter up on charges for not following regulations. The facts are, that there was no time delay because the officer used his head by properly notifying the dispatcher so that another engine company could respond in their place.
Many times the first due company is unavailable due to training, medicals or other emergency situations and the job still gets done because of the back-up system which is set in motion through, the current departmental policy.
To criticize this company for following regulations is wrong and shortsighted I would recommend that the deparnment and its leadership rethink their position on this issue before they allow unqualified personnel to drive a 40,000-Pound apparatus with the potential of injury or even death to others.
