UFA Response to Blue Ribbon Panel Recommendation

Yesterday, the UFA became aware of the Blue Ribbon Panel's recommendation to close eight firehouses. This recommendation was anticipated, but it was not expected for another month. While the US is engaged in a fierce war in Iraq, and NYC continues to remain the number one terrorist target, the timing of this decision could not have been worse for public safety, and for firefighters. The City continues to remain at Code Orange and our current resources to protect it are inadequate. Closing firehouses will only make matters worse.

The panel recommendation is not binding, and the Mayor retains the power to keep these firehouses open. The UFA will continue its pressure on City Hall in its efforts to keep firehouses open, and has been in constant communication with the City Council--and the local community boards--to assist them in this effort. We have continued to get the message out to the public through the media, as we have in every major newspaper today. We are very well aware of the budget problems that the City is facing. The UFA has offered many alternatives to closing the firehouses, including corporate sponsorship. We have been in touch with many corporations that are more than willing to participate in this program.

All delegates and members should check the UFA hotline message (212-545-6972) to keep abreast of what our members can be doing to help us win this fight. We will continue to lobby Albany and Washington to secure funding for FDNY. The fight to keep firehouses open has just begun. The City is required to give 45 days notice prior to closing any firehouse-and no formal notice has been given yet. All members should get involved in the fight to keep the houses open. Please make sure to pass this information along to your delegate and every member of your company. Stay safe.
