NY Post Rebuttal by UFA

The following is the UFA’s response to the New York Post’s disgraceful editorial cartoon. Published December 4th, 2003, Letters to the Editor, New York Post

Dear Editor,

Your editorial cartoon that ran on Page Six on Dec 2 is an absolute disgrace. There is -- and never will be -- anything funny or lighthearted about the fact that 343 New York City Firefighters lost their lives on 9-11. For the Post to lampoon the situation in a cartoon to tie it in with a gossip page story about the personal lives of a handful of individuals is absolutely abhorrent. I am proud to be a New York City Firefighter and take offense to your attempt to stain the blood, sweat and sacrifice made by tens of thousands of New York’s Bravest over the last 100-plus years.

Stephen J. Cassidy, President, Uniformed Firefighters Association

Manning Increases on 5 Engines

President Stephen Cassidy and the UFA Executive Board are pleased to announce that they were able to convince the City to restore the 5th man in 5 additional engine companies. In doing so the City acknowledged the substantial reduction in sick leave levels and advanced the restoration of manpower from our 2003 agreement with the City. The following 5 engine companies received a 5th firefighter as of 1800 hours December 4, 2003:

  • Engine Company 35 in East Harlem, Manhattan
  • Engine Company 68 in Highbridge, the Bronx
  • Engine Company 84 in Washington Heights, Manhattan
  • Engine Company 257 in Canarsie, Brooklyn
  • Engine Company 275 in Jamaica, Queens
